Oakland City Council District Four Representative Message On Police Chief Armstrong
Dear Zennie,
Thank you so much for reaching out and voicing your concerns regarding Chief Armstrongbeing placed on administrative leave. I acknowledge and recognize the widespread community sentiments regarding this matter – especially given crime rates throughout the city, the need for stability in our public safety institutions, and a troubling history of rapid turnover among police chiefs.
However, in my role as part of our city’s legislative branch, I do not have authority to change the Mayor and City Administrator’s decision in any way. I recommend that you reach out to both the Mayor and City Administrator’s offices respectively.
What we do want to recognize if that the decision made by the Mayor and City Administrator is not a disciplinary action at this stage. There is an ongoing personnel investigation -the details for which me and my Council colleagues are not privy to – and that is all we know at this stage. I caution Oakland residents to not jump to any conclusions, and recognize the process involved. We recognize that various branches of City Hall share a similar goal of ensuring not only accountability in city departments, but also working towards moving beyond federal oversight for good.
That being said, public safety and having accountable city departments is of upmost priority to me and my team. The actions of the Mayor and City Administrator will not change or diminish our District 4 office’s efforts to ensure that we voicing the community’s concerns regarding public safety matters, including addressing both violent and property crime, our OPD staffing crisis, the need for walking and beat officers in commercial corridors, and ensuring MACRO and similar civilian public safety programs are fully supported. There are many budgetary and legislative tools that I plan to employ to further these goals in my term that fall within my statutory powers.
