Thousands of Sacramento State students celebrated a major milestone Friday as they took part in the first of three days’ worth of commencement ceremonies for the institution. Graduates and their families started arriving early in the morning at Golden 1 Center in downtown Sacramento for the ceremony held for students from the university’s business college. The university said there’s a record number of graduates this year, and that commencement exercises for all 9,730 will happen at Golden 1 Center on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Ranch Fire update | Arson arrest made for California wildfire

Cal Fire announced an arson arrest in connection with a Butte County vegetation fire that prompted evacuations, according to a release from Friday. The Ranch Fire, which started Wednesday near Big Bend and Newsome Ranch roads near the Concow area, burned 10 acres. It prompted an evacuation order, which is mandatory to follow, for nearby homes. Cal Fire said crews were able to stop the fire from advancing two hours after it started, allowing for the evacuation order to be downgraded to an evacuation warning. With a warning, evacuation is not mandatory but encouraged in case fire activity becomes life-threatening. A controversial measure is now set to hit the November 2024 ballot in South Lake Tahoe. It’s called the Tahoe Vacancy Tax. “For those that can afford to do so, you can buy in, and you can ride the property value as it increases year after year, and there is no cost, but there is a cost to the community to have almost half of our housing units sitting empty,” said Amelia Richmond, co-founder of Locals for Affordable Housing. According to the 2022 census, 44% of homes in South Lake Tahoe sit vacant the majority of the year. “If they are only using their houses a couple of times a year, they’re not in those local businesses, supporting local businesses, paying the sales tax that funds our city services. And so there needs to be an economic offset, if you’re not going to be here full time, here’s a way you can contribute to our economy,” Richmond said. DeNeeka Hill reports. Meteorologist Tamara Berg said the morning will see stratus clouds meander around the Delta and parts of the Sacramento Valley.
