Did Colorado Head Coach Deion Sanders Big Win Over TCU Just Open Raid On HBCU Talent?

Considering that football players at Historically Black Colleges and Universities AKA HBCUs were already entering the transfer portal and going to Power Five schools, we should look at Deion Sanders’ big win and ask if it means that the floodgates will open and we will see a run on HBCU talent?

At HBCU Gameday, Steven Gaither wrote this in July of this year:

The transfer portal has transformed all of college football, and that includes HBCU football. When it was initially announced roughly five years ago, many people predicted that the results would be helpful for HBCUs. While there have certainly been some success stories, there has also been a raid on talent from black colleges, along with other small schools, by the Power Five and FBS programs.

The 2023 transfer portal cycle has been much of the same. Most of these players were diamonds in the rough that shined brightly during their time at HBCUs. Others came to HBCUs from PWIs, made their mark and are looking to finish their careers to where they deem as greener pastures.

He then pointed to 10 transfer to watch, with Sanders son QB Shedeur Sanders going from Jackson State to Colorado at the top of the list. Now, the Shedeur Sanders-lead Colorado Buffaloes have engineered a dramatic 45 to 42 win over TCU. And so with that, it’s fair to ask the question if the transfer portal will be activates at a higher rate and bring more HBCU talent to The Power Five Schools?

And what are The Power Five Schools? Well, they’re really the Power Five Conferences: the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC), Big Ten Conference, Big 12 Conference, Pac-12 Conference, and Southeastern Conference (SEC). And it’s said that “the Power Five conferences are identified individually under NCAA rules as “autonomy conferences,” which grants them some independence from standard NCAA rules to provide additional resources for the benefit of student-athletes.”

So, the question is on the floor. The answer, if you look at it, was that before the Colorado win, the HBCU raid was really only a run on talent at Jackson State. But what about now? That’s the topic of conversation here. What do you think?
