Oakland, Calif – Two Oakland fire stations, Station 28 on Grass Valley Road and Station 25 on Butters Drive, were temporarily closed on Monday as part of budget-balancing efforts amid the city’s $130-million deficit. These “brownouts” leave the stations unmanned, with response times expected to increase significantly. Oakland Firefighters Union President Seth Olyer criticized the decision, citing safety risks for residents in 10 neighborhoods, while Fire Chief Damon Covington assured that first responders will still answer 911 calls. The closures, expected to last six months, aim to save $5.5 million, but further cuts could close four more stations. Meanwhile, a vote on selling the Oakland Coliseum could provide financial relief.
