Rising number of homeless fires threaten LA neighborhoods

The number of fires that are related to homeless people or tents has been climbing in Los Angeles. Data from the LA Fire Department showed there were more than 13,000 homeless fires in 2023 – almost double the number of such fires in 2020. NBC4’s I-Team discovered that some of these encampment fires are apparently caused by homeless people tapping into city electrical wires under the sidewalk. In response, Councilmember Hugo Soto-Martinez’s office said it’s working to “find creative short and long-term solutions for residents impacted by the homelessness crisis.”
