Hawaii commit Kainoa Wade leads Kamehameha to boys volleyball glory

Kamehameha triumphed in the HHSAA Division I boys volleyball championship match on Saturday night, downing Punahou 25-27, 25-23, 25-17, 25-21 at the Neal S. Blaisdell Center.

The Warriors won their first state title since 2011 with the victory. Since then, it was all Punahou for 12 years, excluding the tournaments in 2020 and 2021 that were not held due to the COVID-19 pandemic, and including 2023’s five-set final in which Kamehameha led the Buffanblu 2-0 but couldn’t finish the job.

Kamehameha was led by the play of University of Hawaii commit Kainoa Wade, who had a match-high 34 kills and 11 digs for a double-double.

The University of Hawaii baseball team maintained the country’s longest winning streak on Sunday, finishing a series sweep over UC Riverside with an 11-3 win on Sunday afternoon at Les Murakami Stadium.

Hawaii improved to 32-15 overall and 15-9 in Big West Conference play, extending their winning streak to 11.

Offensively, Hawaii had 12 hits as a team, led by Jared Quandt, who went 4-for-4 with two home runs and four RBI. Meanwhile, Itsuki Takemoto got his first start of the year at designated hitter and went 2-for-4 with two RBI and two runs scored.

The Warriors trailed by two goals with a minute and a half remaining in regulation before forcing overtime.

Saturday was the eighth tournament in a row where Kamehameha and Punahou met in the finals.
