Oakland Mayor Libby Schaaf: “I Feel Totally Screwed By NFL” 5 Years After Raiders Move To Las Vegas
During our interview about Howard Terminal Ballpark and the BCDC Meeting, I took time to ask Oakland Mayor Libby Schaaf what she thought about NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell’s words to me at the NFL Spring League Meeting regarding the work of AASEG to get the NFL back to Oakland.
When presented with the AASEG objective of the NFL’s return to Oakland, Commissioner Goodell gave a kind of “are you kidding” quick laugh before addressing my question about Byron Allen as a future NFL Owner, which included mention of AASEG and the estimated $3 billion in economic power it has brought to bear on the project. In fairness to Roger, he did not continue with a comment on AASEG, but did say positive words about Allen and the chance that a black person would be an NFL Owner in the near future.
Mayor Schaaf’s response to my just bringing up Roger Goodell caused a blast of words where Libby reminded me that Oakland presented the NFL with a “shovel ready” stadium project, and “the Raiders walked away.” Mayor Schaaf also pointedly added that “I feel totally screwed by the NFL.” As I said to her, while I maintained my media company’s coverage of the NFL because the league’s a cornerstone of Zennie62Media and has been for some years now, I understood how she felt. In truth, she was not treated properly.
That said, Libby made the entire matter of the retention of the Raiders about her, rather than Oakland. The Mayor stiff-armed my idea of forming a task force headed by Robert Bobb just after she won the 2014 Oakland Mayoral Race, and then later said that her Oakland economic development staff and administration were her task force. She then put then-Oakland City Administrator, later Assistant City Administrator Claudia Cappio in as the stadium point-person, but she was clearly out of her league (pun intended) in working with the NFL. (Claudia failed to get a much needed stadium spreadsheet done in a timely fashion to the NFL. I know because I asked her about it, she told me she had not gotten to it, and I offered to do it for her, but she did not take up my offer.).
The point is, Libby, unlike Elihu Harris during the Raiders return to Oakland in 1995, made it all about her getting on TV and being the spokesperson, or making sure she had a face that presented her political objectives but did not have anything to do with getting the job of retaining the Raiders done. And, to repeat, she did not call on Oakland’s business community for help, whereas Elihu had the helping hand of the Oakland Coliseum Board, then helmed by Peerless Coffee CEO George Vukasin.
Stay tuned.
