Beth was johnny-on-the-spot with her videos. But what happened was my fault.After 12 years of avoiding Olympics content because of the International Olympic Committee’s draconian and arbitrary treatment of videos that happen to have the four rings in them, a variant of that issue hit, yet again. But this time was just plain weird.The reason given was “Paris 2024 text on perimeter boards where ‘0’ in 2024 is replaced by creatively distinct work ‘Marianne’” Seriously. Now, this was a video created by an attendee of the event. Since Zennie62Media is a news organization, it would have happened even if we had a press credential. Also, news organizations can link to it or use a snippet of content from it.If that haoppened, the IOC would not go after the broadcaster, even if it went after me. This, as well as the mark itself and who would notice the difference, is arbitrary. Completely. It also was not applied to all of the videos we uploaded – but we took them down any way as a precaution.The Digital Millienium Copyright Act or DMCA has not been changed since its passage in 1998. It’s time to make content on YouTube automatically considered as fair use unless the copyright owner can prove otherwise.
