A Monroe family had a close encounter with a cougar over the weekend when the wild cat ran through their backyard and came within feet of the family. On Saturday, the Havener family were sitting on their back patio when a cougar ran through their yard and came face to face with them. The shocking moments were captured on their surveillance cameras. “All of a sudden this whirlwind shows up in the middle of us,” said Greg Havener.

The Seattle City Council approved a new contract with the Seattle Police Officer’s Guild (SPOG), despite one councilmember’s call for a pause on voting until the public has a chance to weigh in. The full council voted on Tuesday to approve the contract; councilmember Tammy Morales was the lone opposing vote in the 8-1 result. “This is a major step forward not just for the men and women and Seattle Police Department, but also for our goals of creating public safety, to create that safe place in our city,” said Councilmember Bob Kettle, who is the chair of the Public Safety Committee. The agreement between the City of Seattle and SPOG retroactively raises wages for the entire police force going back to 2021, which Mayor Bruce Harrell says would make the Seattle Police Department among the most competitively paid in the state. Suspect allegedly stabbed man to death for ‘brushing past him’ at Capitol Hill light rail station

The man accused of a fatal stabbing at the Capitol Hill light rail station in Seattle waived his first court appearance on Tuesday, but the judge found probable cause for second-degree murder and ruled he will be held on $3 million bail. The suspect allegedly stabbed the victim after a fight ensued at the station on Saturday. According to court documents, the fight started because the suspect didn’t like the way the victim “brushed by him when walking down the escalator” at the light rail station. The Department of Justice determined that Boeing violated a “deferred prosecution agreement” that allowed the company to avoid criminal prosecution after two deadly crashes involving its 737 Max aircraft, the agency told a federal judge on Tuesday, May 14. It is now up to the DOJ to weigh whether to file charges against the aircraft maker. Prosecutors will tell the court no later than July 7 how they plan to proceed, the Department of Justice said. Boeing failed to make changes to prevent it from violating federal anti-fraud laws, which was a condition of the 2021 agreement, Glenn Leon, the head of the fraud section of the Justice Department’s criminal division, said in a letter. Audit: King County Recorder’s Office misallocated nearly $7 million to wrong customers

A new audit released Tuesday found that the King County Recorder’s Office (KCRO) misallocated millions in prepaid funds, overbilling and lost revenue over the last six years. The King County auditor said the KCRO suffered from a “lack of oversight” in its final operations. The new audit reviewed the KCRO’s work from 2018-2023, finding that errors in prepaid account deposits misallocated nearly $7 million to the wrong customers.
