It was a symbolic moment: in 1963, the last prisoners from Alcatraz Island in San Francisco were being transferred out from one of the world’s most famous prisons to a facility in Illinois. For almost three decades, Alcatraz became home to some of the most notorious bank robbers and racketeers of the Prohibition and Great Depression eras. To name a few: Machine Gun Kelly (George Kelly Barnes), Alvin “Creepy” Karpis and, of course, Al Capone. The reason why it no longer served as a functioning prison? Money. CHP motorcyclist seriously injured in Placer County after driver runs red light

A California Highway Patrol motorcyclist is seriously injured after a driver who ran a red light hit them in Placer County, officials said. The crash happened around 6:35 a.m. along Highway 49 at Shale Ridge Road near the Auburn area, CHP said. A vehicle was going southbound on Highway 49, blew past the red light and hit the CHP officer who was going northbound toward Shale Ridge Road, ejecting him. CHP said the officer was transported to the hospital with major injuries. CHP motorcyclist hit by driver who ran red light

A California Highway Patrol motorcyclist is seriously injured after a driver who ran a red light hit them in Placer County, officials said. The crash happened around 6:35 a.m. along Highway 49 at Shale Ridge Road near the Auburn area, CHP said. A vehicle was going southbound on Hwy. 49, blew past the red light and hit the CHP officer who was going northbound toward Shale Ridge Road, ejecting him.
